Refreshing your existing website

I mostly build new sites, but just as many projects are refreshes: a dated site that loads slowly, no longer works on a phone or no longer matches how your business works today.

Sound familiar? Four signs a website is costing more than it returns.

  • Ilse wants to know whether the bakery is open, but the Facebook page asks her to log in first.

There’s no website yet, just a Facebook page or word of mouth.

  • Frituur Freddy on the phone: ‘Hello doctor, it is about my cat.’

The site has been up for years and no longer looks like how the business works today.

  • Geert is still waiting for his website to load. By now it is 2051 and he has grown a long grey beard.

On a phone everything is skewed or too small, and the site often loads painfully slowly.

  • Hairdresser Carine turns detective to find Kevin, who built her website in 2017, because she wants to change one word.

No one still knows who manages the site, or how to change anything on it.

What happens to your old site

I start with a clean slate: a new design and new, rewritten copy, built on the same stable footing as every JTMedia site. The content that still holds up comes across; the rest I let go.

Your domain name stays yours and moves with it. If your email runs on that domain, it’s left untouched; only the website changes. After going live you get the files and the explanation, and there’s no lock-in.

Do you stay findable on Google?

Yes. You keep your own domain name, so the addresses Google already knows stay in place. If the structure of the site changes, I redirect the old addresses to the new ones, so no visitors or search results are lost.

The rewritten copy and the faster, mobile-friendly build usually move you forward. A dated site that is slow and reads badly on a phone rarely ranks well; a refresh fixes that along the way.

Does my old site stay online during the build?

Yes. I build the new site separately, apart from your existing domain, so visitors and clients keep seeing the old site as usual throughout the whole build. Only once you’ve approved the end result do I switch the domain over to the new site.

That switch itself usually takes anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours, depending on how fast the change reaches your domain registrar. So there’s never a moment where your business is without a website.

Not sure what a website costs?

Three quick choices, a ballpark price straight away. No email address needed.

Step 1 of 3 · type
A new website, or refreshing an existing one?

This mainly helps prepare the conversation. The ballpark price depends on steps 2 and 3.

Step 2 of 3 · size
Roughly how many pages?
Step 3 of 3 · extras
Anything extra? (none is fine too)
Ballpark price

Excluding VAT. I settle the exact price with you, usually within this range.
